Our vision for all is:
Fledge and Fly High
The definition of the statement and choice of words were selected because:
‘Fledge’ which is a term associated with birds meaning ‘to grow feathers and learn to fly’. This word we believe encompasses the vision of learning, growing, nurturing and preparing our students for adult life. All of the school’s seven values are involved and embedded in this preparation.
‘Fly High’ refers to the school having high aspirations for all learners irrespective of a child’s academic ability or interpersonal skills. We want all pupils at Hinchliffe Mill school to be the very best they can be in all aspects of their life whilst they are students at our school and into their adult life. The words flourish, prosper, thrive and inspire are our long and short term goals for all pupils.
The school values underpin the vision statement above. These are the foundations for the ethos and culture at Hinchliffe Mill School. The values which underpin the school’s vision and mission statement are as follows:

Our school values help us make the right decisions when we interact in our everyday life with friends, family, school staff and other people that we meet in our community
There are special and unique things about our community – our landscape, our geography, our history.
It is important that we play a part in our community, as community citizens – our voice counts, we care about looking after our community, we want to be involved in decisions locally and nationally – embedding our school values in our community and our interactions within it.
People live in different communities, with diverse cultures, histories and landscapes but we have things in common. People should be treated equally because of this commonality. Diversity is to be celebrated and respected, we are interested in how other communities are unique and special and how we can learn from them to enrich our lives.
If we want people to value and respect us then we must respect other people’s differences along with their similarities. We strive to understand differences – we know that our view of the world is particular linked to our experiences. Therefore, we look at different people and places with wonder and want to learn about other people’s stories and journeys by answering questions and being respectfully curious.
We want to be responsible citizens of our global community, we use our school values to support our interactions with all people. We care about all the people of earth, we want to help people in other parts of the world who want our help, we want to be involved in global decisions.
We are not born on the earth, we are born from the earth. We need to care for our planet and treat it with respect because we belong to it and we are part of it and have a duty to care for and sustain it for future generations.
We show compassion towards animals, plants and their habitats and embed our school values in our interactions with other living things. We have to share the planet and make sure our decisions help other living things to flourish.
We want to create a culture of sustainability for our young people, enabling them to recognise how we can support this in our daily life to help the planet.

- Our 3xwhole school 'BIG IDEAS' - Community - Diversity - Sustainability are acknowledged throughout our curriculum offer and are used along with the school's seven core values and the mission statement to build a clear and shared ethos for all at Hinchliffe Mill School. Aiming to prepare our pupils for life in a modern and multicultural word.
- Using materials that reflect the diversity of the school population, local community and beyond without stereotyping
- We have an awareness and understanding of the 9 protected characteristics and are reflective and proactive to reduce any bias or unconscious bias towards these, in addition to considering the perceptions or association that are linked to these characteristics
- We promoting attitudes and values, challenging discriminatory behaviour or prejudice
- We providing opportunities for pupils to appreciate their own culture and celebrate the diversity of the cultural similarities and difference of others
- Seeking to involve all parents in supporting their child’s education
- Utilising teaching approaches appropriate for the whole school population which are inclusive and reflective of our pupils.
