The intention for Art at our school

Why Is Art important to learn?

Art gives children the freedom and choice to create something that is unique to them and allows them to communicate without using words. Art allows children the freedom to express themselves in a safe and stimulating environment and helps to develop their skills of creativity.

What Does Art at Hinchliffe Mill School look Like?

From EYFS to Year 6, children at Hinchliffe Mill are given opportunities to develop their curiosity and confidence in their own abilities so that they can create without boundaries. Children are encouraged to take risks and to not be afraid to make mistakes which promotes self -esteem and confidence. In order to do this, we explore a range of different artists, and use a range of materials and techniques. Sketchbooks are used as a working document to record ideas and observations. The children are taught to develop the skills to choose their own media appropriate to the task and to be able to explain, evaluate and improve on their choices.

Implementation

How is Art taught across school?

Art is taught as a topic-based subject in six half terms over the year.

 How is Art Assessed?

At Hinchliffe Mill, formative assessment in art occurs throughout the learning process, through dialogue and conversation. As we value the children’s creative and individual responses in the subject, we give open-ended feedback and use effective questioning techniques.

What adjustments are made to ensure that learning is accessible to all pupils?

Planning identifies areas for support for all pupils with additional needs and differentiation is in place so that all pupils can meet the desired learning outcomes for the lesson and unit of work.

How do we promote Art?

  • Through displays across school that celebrate children’s art work and work of those artists that have studied.
  • Showing how art is relevant in our society through cross-curricular links to other subjects and topics.
  • Through art projects that may run across several days and promote the art of other countries and cultures.
