The intention for Design Technology at our school

Why Is Design Technology important to learn?

Design and Technology enables children to draws on their maths, science, engineering, computing and art skills. Risk-taking is an integral to DT and once learnt, children become resourceful, innovative and enterprising. Through evaluation of real past and present Design and Technology, pupils become critical thinkers and see the purpose of design for the real world.

What Does Design Technology at Hinchliffe Mill School look Like?

At Hinchliffe Mill Primary School, our Design and Technology curriculum intends to be inspiring, practical, meaningful and memorable.  Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts.

Within Design and Technology children will learn and build on a range of practical and technical skills testing their ideas and critiquing and evaluating both their own products and the work of others. Children are taught to plan, think creatively, solve problems, consider the needs of others, take risks, be resourceful, be innovative and be enterprising.

Implementation

How is Design Technology taught across school?

Design Technology is taught at the beginning of each new school term during Design Technology Days so that children can experience the whole process from designing right through to evaluating and improving their work over a few days.

How is Design Technology Assessed?

At Hinchliffe Mill, formative assessment in Design Technology occurs throughout the learning process, through dialogue and conversation. Children are encouraged to evaluate and improve at every stage of the design process and we give open-ended feedback and use effective questioning techniques.

What adjustments are made to ensure that learning is accessible to all pupils?

Planning identifies areas for support for all pupils with additional needs and differentiation is in place so that all pupils can meet the desired learning outcomes for the lesson and unit of work.

How do we promote Design Technology?

  • Our termly Design Technology weeks encourage children to plan, build, test, evaluate and improve their work so that children can achieve a sense of accomplishment in completing their DT project in a few days.
  • Work from EYFS to Year 6 is celebrated during whole school assemblies and then often displayed afterwards too.
