Modern Foreign Language - French
Modern Foreign Language Leader: Miss Dunkerley
The intention for MFL at our school and why it is important to learn another language?
At Hinchliffe Mill Junior and Infant School, we strive to provide our children with opportunities to become global citizens, deepening their interest and wonder in exploring their own place in the world. The experience of learning a language introduces them to the world in ways they might otherwise have not experienced. Language teaching provides the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries and promoting their individual cultural capital.
What Does MFL at Hinchliffe Mill School look Like?
We follow a progression of skills which meets the requirements of the National Curriculum 2014 for Languages at Key Stage 2. This enables pupils to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing, focused on familiar and routine matters, using their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary.
Implementation
How is MFL taught across school?
MFL is taught as a discreet subject in six half terms over the academic year from Key Stage 2, starting in Year 3. The language taught is French.
How is MFL Assessed?
At Hinchliffe Mill, formative assessment in languages occurs throughout the learning process, through dialogue and conversation. We value the children’s creative and individual responses in the subject and we give open-ended feedback and use effective questioning techniques.
What adjustments are made to ensure that learning is accessible to all pupils?
Planning identifies areas for support for all pupils with additional needs and differentiation is in place so that all pupils can meet the desired learning outcomes for the lesson and unit of work.
How do we promote MFL?
Through promoting French Days in school where children have opportunities to design French menus, use Euros, have conversations in French and learn French songs.
